Leadership Fayette Class of 2024 had a wonderful evening visiting the farm of John and Debbie Sullivan on Tuesday, March 20. Session six focused on the importance of Agriculture in Fayette County and how it impacts the economy of our county.
The class was treated to various knowledgeable speakers about issues related to agriculture. Ryan Thomas spoke about the beef cattle industry with an emphasis on custom beef processing. John Sullivan, whose family has operated Sullivan Farms for the last three generations, spoke about the challenges and opportunities in farming and provided a tour of farming equipment. Jane educated the group on the importance of cotton, soybeans, and corn, pointing out all the items we use everyday that are derived from crops produced by farmers. Steve Reeves informed the class of the significant change in the cost associated with farming, which is creating barriers to young adults getting into farming. Jeff Via spoke about the ongoing education provided to farmers due to advanced technology and discussed the growth of fishery in Fayette County. Debbie Sullivan provided a wonderful meal catered by Wolf River Cafe.
