1. What are some of the things you appreciate most about Fayette County? Born, reared, and educated in Fayette County, daughter of Eva Maclin and great niece of Katherline Maclin, who was part of the first group of black students to attend an all-white school, I have a sincere appreciation for the sacrifices that were made for equitable access to a quality, rigorous education. Additionally, I love the close-knit, warm, caring, and friendly family communities that set a precedence in laying a solid foundation for our children to thrive in school and life.
2. What was your motivation to attend Leadership Fayette? I was inspired by networking to create opportunities to volunteer, learn, and lead in our communities. As an educator for over 25 years, I strive to provide students and young adults with a high-quality experience that fuels further action as well as inspire and equip them to be the change they wish to see in the world.
3. What have you personally gotten out of your involvement in Leadership Fayette?
Through the humbling experiences of Leadership Fayette, I gained an in-depth view of critical issues facing our community, access for community involvement opportunities, the opportunity to discuss important issues with community leaders, and develop new, as well as, strengthen relationships with peers.
4. How did attending Leadership Fayette influence you as a leader?
Attending Leadership Fayette sessions strengthened me as a leader by promoting building connections with others and sharing my passion. I strongly believe that when others can feel what you feel, they are empowered to use that passion to achieve greater results; hence, we develop stronger communities.
5. Would you encourage others to get involved with Leadership Fayette?
Yes, I would encourage others to become involved in Leadership Fayette because they will be afforded the opportunity to strengthen leadership skills, network to build relationships/partnerships, gain insight on Fayette County’s historical information, important issues, challenges, as well as identify primary needs and ways they can make a difference in shaping the future of Fayette County.
6. What positive impact are you planning on having on Fayette County as a result of attending Leadership Fayette?
The school is known to be the second home of students, and it is my greatest desire to equip students with the education, skills, technology, supports, and opportunities to obtain high-skill, high-demand occupations that will give them the opportunity to build vibrant, enduring neighborhoods and communities that people, specifically young people, will want to leave home.
7. How did attending Leadership Fayette prepare you for your current and/or next career?
Opportunities to network and discuss key issues with community leaders will enable me to accept the daily challenge of promoting whole child development. Furthermore, engaging students, parents, local community leaders, and civic organization to work collaboratively as partners in education is one of the pillars of the foundation in addressing educational and community needs. Leadership development activities will strengthen efforts to use my experiences (challenges, opportunities, and triumphs) to encourage our youth to further their education and chase their dreams until they are achieved.
Personally, my foundation is built on “If I can help someone, my living will not be in vain.” Moreover, without reservation, I will continue to stand up for what’s right , even when I have to stand alone.
8. What year did you graduate from Leadership Fayette? I am a proud Leadership Fayette Class of 2019 graduate.
