Leadership Fayette is proud to join with the The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change to bring the Tent City exhibit to Fayette County. Tent City was an event in the Civil Rights Movement, where African American sharecroppers were evicted due to their voter registration status, symbolizing the struggles against racial discrimination and inequality during that era. As the Tent City artifacts make their way into town on Monday, January 30th around noon, the Somerville Police Department will halt traffic in front of the Fayette County Courthouse, where a truck delivering the exhibit artifacts will stop. A memorial wreath will be placed on the courthouse lawn. A solemn moment of silence in remembrance of the Civil Rights movement and all of the people who fought for those rights who are no longer with us will be held. The Tent City artifacts will then travel to be displayed at the FCPS Central Administration Building (CAB).
The free Tent City Exhibit will be open to the public on February 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, and 23 at the Central Administration Building from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. There will also be a free mini session on the Tent City movement open to the public on February 17 from 2:00-4:00 PM at CAB.
Thank you to Fayette County Public Schools and the Town of Somerville Police Department for bringing the exhibit from Memphis to the CAB for display.
